Ffern is a British fragrance house based in Somerset, England, that produces natural, small-batch perfumes released on a seasonal schedule.[1][2] Founded in 2018 by siblings Owen Mears and Emily Cameron, the company releases four fragrances a year, each timed to a solstice or equinox and made to order for members of a subscription list it calls the "ledger."[1][3] Ffern positions itself around natural ingredients, craft production, and elaborate storytelling, and it has built an online following, particularly on TikTok, that has produced long waiting lists to join its membership.[4][5]
Background
Owen Mears and Emily Cameron grew up in a village in Somerset, next to what has been described as one of the first biodynamic herb farms in Europe, an environment they have credited with shaping the brand's focus on natural scent.[1][4] Mears, an Oxford University graduate, developed an interest in the history of natural perfumery and the work of Joseph Robert, a 19th-century perfumer credited with an early solvent-extraction process for drawing oils from natural ingredients.[4] When the siblings set out to create their first fragrance, they worked with the perfumers François Robert — Joseph Robert's great-grandson and part of a multi-generational French perfumery family — and Elodie Durande.[4][6] Ffern introduced its first fragrance on the winter solstice of 2018; some coverage dates the brand's public launch to 2019.[4][3]
The ledger and products
Ffern sells primarily through its ledger, a membership list that is free to join but that commits members to purchasing each seasonal release, priced at about $129 per bottle.[3][4] The company blends each fragrance to order, producing roughly one bottle for each name on the ledger so that little or no excess is made; returned or unsold bottles are placed in an archive from which members can later buy past releases.[7][3] Because supply is limited and sold-out scents are not remade, the model has generated long waiting lists; the company said its client list grew about 300 percent in 2023, and reported waiting lists ranged from more than 20,000 people that year to hundreds of thousands by 2025.[5][3] Members receive a sample vial with each shipment and can return the full, unopened bottle at no cost if they do not want it.[4]
Storytelling and film
Ffern accompanies each release with what it frames as an immersive "world," including short films, artwork, and curated packaging, and it has built an in-house team dedicated to filmmaking.[2][1] Its seasonal films have been shot on location with performers and named talent — for example, figure skaters on wild ice in Canada for its Winter 2025 release and the actor Ruth Wilson on the Isle of Skye for a winter film — and each fragrance is typically paired with a collaborating artist whose work is included as a print.[2][3] The seasonal scents are conceived by the brand's in-house perfumer, Elodie Durande, who trained under François Robert, and are blended and aged in small batches in Somerset using natural ingredients.[1][6]
Retail and reception
In November 2022, Ffern opened a boutique, which it describes as an artisan salon, in the Soho district of London, offering craft workshops and serving tea in handmade pottery; the company has emphasized plastic-free, recyclable packaging.[5][4] Ffern has drawn a substantial social-media following — its summer 2023 collection was reported to have generated hundreds of millions of TikTok views — and has been covered as a cult favorite by beauty and design publications.[5][1] The company presents its made-to-order approach as a way to avoid the excess inventory common in the fragrance industry, since it produces only what its members have committed to buy.[1]
